President of India is referred to as the first citizen of India. The Indian President is elected by an electoral college composed of the elected members of the Parliament, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and Vidhan Sabha.
There have been 15 personalities who served as Indian Presidents since the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950 and there have been tenures when the country was headed by an acting President. In this article, you will get to know about all the Presidents of India from 1950 to 2022.

NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu has been announced as the new President of India on 21 July 2022. Article 52 of the Indian Constitution states that there shall be a President of India. The President is the nominal head of government, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister (Council of Ministers). In India, the President is the head of state but does not exercise executive powers. All executive action is taken in the name of the President of India. All MoUs signed with any foreign country are in the name of the President of India. The first President of India was Dr. Rajendra Prasad while the current President of India is Draupadi Murmu.
Draupadi Murmu becomes the new President of India
Draupadi Murmu has become the new President of India after the announcement of the results of the presidential election on 21 July 2022 after the completion of the term of Shri Ram Nath Kovind. Draupadi Murmu is the second woman President of India and the first tribal woman President of India. Draupadi Murmu is the 15th President of India after Shri Ramnath Kovind. A candidate of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the 64-year-old former teacher hails from the state of Odisha (Orissa) and has served as the state’s governor. President of India: Eligibility
Article 58 of the Indian Constitution lays down certain conditions for a candidate to be eligible for election to the President. Some of the following are given below:
- The President must be a citizen of India.
- The President must be above 35 years of age.
- The President must be eligible for election as a member of the Lok Sabha.
- The President of India should not hold any office of profit under the State Government, Union and other local authorities.

Draupadi Murmu (2022-incumbent)
Draupadi Murmu is the current President of the Republic of India, elected on 21 July 2022. She is the 15th President of India after Shri Ram Nath Kovind. Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was elected as a councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. Murmu became the chairman of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 2000. He also served as the National Vice President of the BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha. Murmu was the first woman governor of Jharkhand. See the list of presidents before him below.
Shri Ram Nath Kovind (2017-2022)
Shri Ram Nath Kovind is an Indian politician who served as the 14th President of India from 25 July 2017 to 21 July 2022. He was the first person from Uttar Pradesh to serve as the President of India. Ram Nath Kovind was the former Governor of Bihar. He has been a strong supporter of equality in society and integrity in public life.
Pranab Mukherjee (2012-2017)
Pranab Mukherjee was an Indian politician and government official who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017. Pranab Mukherjee passed away on 31 August 2020 at the age of 84 after battling a prolonged illness. A veteran in Indian politics, he had the rare distinction of serving as the Minister of External Affairs, Defence, Commerce and Finance at different times in his long and illustrious political career spanning several decades.
Pratibha Patil (2007-2012)
Pratibha Patil was the first woman to serve as the President of India. She was the 12th President of India and served from 2007 to 2012. Prior to her election as President, Patil served as the Governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007, also being the first woman to hold the position. While in the Rajya Sabha, Patil was the Deputy Chairman from 1986 to 1988 and when Dr. R. Venkataraman was elected as the President of India, then he also served as the President.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (2002–2007)
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was an Indian aerospace scientist who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. apj Abdul Kalam, full Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, (born October 15, 1931, Rameswaram, India—died July 27, 2015, Shillong), Indian scientist and politician who played a leading role in the development of India’s missile and nuclear weapons programmes.
Kocheril Raman Narayanan (1997-2002)
Kocheril Raman Narayanan was the Member of Parliament from Ottapalam constituency for three consecutive terms (1984, 1989 and 1991). In 1985, he was appointed as the Minister of State (Planning, External Affairs and Science and Technology) in the Rajiv Gandhi government. In 1992, he was elected as the Vice President of India and later, in 1997, he was elected to the highest office of the President of India. He was the first Dalit to hold the high office of President of India as the 10th President of India.
Shankar Dayal Sharma (1992–1997)
Shankar Dayal Sharma was the 9th President of India and served the country from 1992 to 1997. He was the then Chief Minister of Bhopal State (1 April 1952 to November 1956), Cabinet Minister, Government of Madhya Pradesh for Education, Law, Public Works, Industry and Commerce, National Resources and Separate Revenue (1950–1967) and then Union Minister of Communications. (10 October 1974 to 24 March 1977). He was the Governor of Andhra Pradesh (29 August 1984 to 25 November 1985) and the Governor of Punjab (26 November 1985 to 2 April 1986).
Ramaswamy Venkataraman (1987–1992)
Earlier a freedom struggle, he became the 8th President of India in 1987. His term as the President of India ended in 1992. He received the Tamra Patra from India and the Soviet Land Award from Russia for his works.
Giani Zail Singh (1982–1987)
In 1982 the Chief Minister of Punjab became the President of India. In his 5 year tenure, there were days with red letters like assassination of Indira Gandhi, Operation Blue Star, anti-Sikh riots etc.
Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy (1977–1982)
He was the first president to be elected unopposed. He became the Speaker from the post of Speaker of the Lok Sabha and remained so till 1982.
Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (1974–1977)
After Hussein, he became the second president to die while in office. He served as the President for a term of 3 years from 1974 to 1977.
Varahagiri Venkata Giri (1969–1974)
He was the President from 1969 to 1974. He was the only independent candidate to be the President of India. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1975.
Dr. Zakir Hussain (1967-1969)
Dr. Hussain, the first Muslim President of India, served a 2-year term till 1969 and he died in this post. After his death, Mohamed Hidayatullah was made acting president. Earlier Dr. Hussain was the Governor of Bihar.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1962-1967)
The person whose birthday is celebrated and celebrated as Teacher’s Day was the second President of India. His tenure was from 1962 to 1967. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad (1950-1962)
The first President of India, Dr. Prasad served for two consecutive terms from 1950 to 1962. The Indian independence movement was led by him and he led the Constituent Assembly. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1962.

The President is elected by the electoral college
(i) Elected members of both the Houses of Parliament
(ii) Elected members of the State Legislative Assemblies
(iii) Elected Members of the Legislative Assemblies of Delhi and Puducherry (added by the 70th Amendment Act, 1992).
Elected for five years but eligible for immediate re-election and may serve any term.
The President can be removed from office if the President is found to have violated the Constitution. This impeachment can be introduced in either house of the Parliament.
The Vice President acts as the President in the absence of the President due to death, resignation, impeachment or other situations.

1. So far, seven have been members of a political party before being elected president.
2. Six of these were active party members of the Congress Party.
3. Dr. Rajendra Prasad (the first President of India) is the only person who has held the office for two terms. 4. Outgoing President Draupadi Murmu was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party to become the President of India.
